The soil can be so soft in these neighborhouds that iff a house does not have a good foundation, it might sinkin. At the construction of this house in the 17's they probably didn't use the right material for the foundation on the left side of the house.

A lovely, beautiful photo but it does give me a sinking feeling....
Beautiful but it must make it hard to sleep in if you hear something creaking in the middle of the night.
