We are walking on the 'trekpad' literally 'pull path' or towing path, it used to be used by horses to pull canal boats. In Holland they used mainly horses. In Russia it were usaully people Illa Repin made the most famous painting of Russia on this, 'The Wolga thugs'.

It's better to trek with a backpack than towing a heavy barge. I like very much Repin and remember well this painting.

I live in a small village in Western New York...Brockport. The Erie Canal runs through it...mules used to pull barges through it many years ago. The New York State Canal system is 524 miles long with 230 towns and villages on it's banks.

I looked at all of your photos and was happy to see what life is like in the Netherlands. We have a good friend from there, who has lived in the states for a long time. His last name is Elfring and I bought a horse from him over 25 years ago. Her name was Marieke and her brothers name was Hollander.

Nice blog. Are you the cook on the other site you post? I wish I could read the recipes...they look great.

How interesting! It must have been hard work pulling those boats.
